Back in my hotel room to point out the toilet brush. These are a part of all restrooms in Germany and I have been told that, yes, one is expected to clean up after oneself if necessary. Everything in this country is super clean and the country is on a 10 year tear towards energy self-sufficiency which I bet they will accomplish. There is a huge emphasis on conservation and of solar and wind generation.

We Care Spa: Hot Springs, CA

This is one of the restrooms in the colonics section of the the main building. The entrance is discreetly tucked away near the pool so it can be used by those relaxing in the sun as well as those pre and post treatment.  Fortunately I did not experience, or hear of, any occupancy issues. Believe me, after a colonic you don't want to be standing around waiting for the toilet. I enjoyed the serene quality of the purely decorative cabinet with its empty glass bottles and little vase with a fresh flower.

Metro North

Believe me this picture does not in any way convey how disgusting this restroom was. In fact, the first thing I had to do was flush the previous occupants waste and then figure out how to get the seat down without getting come infectious disease.

Do college students really care about covering the toilet seat? Did hear some gerat compositions by senior students which inspired an artist, Ellen Priest, to produce a body of drawings and paintings based on them. Check it out if you get to Boston or check out her website at www.ellenpriest.com.

Monkey Farm: Old Saybrook, CT

I have lived in this neck of the woods since 1974 and had never been into this establishment believing, as one friend recently wrote, "thought the people who “dined” at The Monkey Farm had tattoos on all body parts, were missing most of their teeth and slept with their first cousins". This proved not to be the case at lunch time anyway. Had a perfectly delicious Reuben sandwich with yummy coleslaw and found the restroom to be scrupulously clean with a funny retro pink sink and incongruously encourgaing pro Giants scribblings on the slate walls.

PAX wholesome food: Manhattan

A quick place to run into while shopping. Clean enough and located upstairs which was devoid of diners and I didn't have to feel too guilty that I wasn't actually a patron. Again lots of signs about what not to put in various recepticles. I guess there really is no toilet ettiquette taught any more.

Member’s Dining Room, Metropolitan Museum: Manhattan

This restroom is fine, but a long walk from the dining room and nothing special, unlike the dining room itself which has a reserved and elegant atmosphere partially created by its wall of slanting windows overlooking Central Park.  The food is delicious and the clientelle is interesting to observe if your lunch partner isn't.

The Drunken Horse: Chelsea, Manhattan

When did people start throwing paper towels in the toilet? This is not a sign I remember seeing in such profusion a few years ago. Stumbled into this empty wine bar - it was only 4:15pm- in hopes of having a rejuvenating cup of tea after viewing 10 art galleries.  Soon enough a steaming glass of Earl Grey was soon in front of me and a soothing mix of music from Pandora reenergized me.

Yes this is a great bathroom. Not only does it have fabulous art work, which the reflection doesn't help show to best affect, and a soaking tub and huge open shower, it also has one of those Japanese toilets that sprays various parts of your body which I am too polite to mention. I have resisted using this function on previous occassions, but decided to give it a try this time. WOW.  Really great. Still need the paper to dry yourself though. Looks like you could push the wrong button and end up on the towel rack!

Metro North: NYC to New Haven

Posted in My Life, Out & About |

I had heard that there were some new trains on this line, but this was my first experience of the bright red seats, hyper white lighting and spotless restroom.  Could this really be?  After years of squatting over the most disgusting toilets and rinsing hands in the most eroded sinks in this country, we have something modern and clean? WOW.  How long can this last?It almost made up for the fact that I actually took the wrong train ending up on the one that stops at every station between NYC and Stamford rather than the express- one leaves at 4:13, the other at 4:15- adding a half hour to my journey.
