Bradlee Airport:Hartford,CT

In the air again. This time Tortola and Sarasota. Warm sand and cool drinks for the next week. Always liked using this airport but the renovated terminal and having JetBlue makes it even better.

Lava Bay: Tortola

Posted in My Life, Out & About |

You can just see a hint of the bay in the break in the trees in the middle of this shot. It is beautiful and quite secluded. This photo does not give a true impression of the road going down to it which I was afraid to take my car on and which was even trecherous to walk down. Much slipping and sliding on the loose gravel. Worth the journey, especially as three guys appeared to ride the growing swells and one of them was training for the Bodyboarding World Championship. Who knew there even ws such a sport? He was amazing to watch as he spiralled and spun in the waves. Should have gotten his name.

Plantation ruins: Tortola

Posted in My Life, Out & About |

Some friends who live full time on the island brought us to this little known place by the water on the north end of the island. There are the remains of several stone buildings and a shore filled with beautiful rocks and old coral formations. It was wild to think of people living in this remote place 100 years ago and producing low grade sugar cane. Amazingly there is no remnant of the crop to be found.

DMV: Tortola

Cars have to be registered anually on this island. Guess they want to make sure the lights and such aren't rusted out. When the DMV was downtown, it was a half day adventure in waiting. Now there is a spiffy new building midway between the east and west ends of the island and 5 minutes from where I stay. The entire process, as there was no one in fornt of me, took less than half an hour. Of course much of this was taken up with the hand writting of various reports and receipts. Look how nice the restroom is.

Cane Garden Bay: Tortola

Half the toilets in this public restroom were bolted.  Who knows why. The rest were close to unusable, but I managed. Went to find the newly opened recycled glass blowing shop, but of course it was closed since it was Sunday.  Found a few of their items at the Myett's resort - I use this term loosely- shop on the beach.  Brought back a pumpkin for the Thanksgiving table.

Pusser’s Landing: Sopers Hole, Tortola

Posted in My Life, Out & About |

Pusser's has several locations on the island.  This is the one with the most outdoor seating and though it is not memorable, it is fun to look at the boats and even more fun to wander through the shops. All the buildings are painted in bright Carribean colors- see a hit of the purple shutters- and there is a good small grocery store. Nice to have a toilette with a view.

Smuggler’s Cove: Tortola, BVI

Posted in My Life, Out & About |

Nothing like sitting in the hot sun trying to stay hydrated while listening to the waves breaking on the beach to make me  heed nature's call even more frequently than normal.

Smuggler’s Cove: Tortola, BVI

Nice beach.  A bit crowded, but everyone was focused on the water rather than what I was doing behind the trees.

The Clubhouse: Frenchman’s Cay, Tortola, BVI

No one is going to bother you in this stall.  Rather inelegant for one of the best appointed and most delicious restaurants on the island.
